Why do some people of faith seem to be so intolerant?

We’ve missed something.  The Bible teaches us that religion is not about people trying to connect with God.  Real religion, according to the Bible, is helping people in need (James 1:27).

So Christianity is more than just a religion or engaging in a religious system.  Christianity is all about living relationships: a living, experiential relationship with God and relationships with others.  When we approach our connection with God where we communicate with him in daily prayer and respond to his promptings, nudges and leadings in our daily lives, we are engaged in a two-way, living relationship with him.

God wants us to avoid getting bogged down in rigid religious systems that actually take our focus off of a living, thriving, fluid relationship with him.  A lot of needless intolerance emanates from this kind of religious practice as it turns into judging others who don't fit into established rigid rules and regulations that even Jesus never mentioned.

Now, if someone accuses a Christian of being intolerant because he or she is following Jesus and what he said and did, then it may be appropriate to explain that there are still some key spiritual principles that God wants us to adhere to.  For instance, the Bible is clear about loving God above all else.  But, if one has genuine faith, he or she will avoid the needless judging of others.  Jesus even cautioned people - especially the so-called religious leaders of his day - to be extremely careful with the whole idea of judging others.  It's often this kind of needless judging and petty rule-keeping that has caused many people to view faith as something that's intolerant.
